Subject Guide (LIS 702)

Acquiring information is a key skill in an academic field, but the ability to share that information with others is what those in the Library and Information Science field are learning to perfect. Facilitating access to information requires evaluating various resources and presenting them in a clear and aesthetically appropriate manner. I had to consider how best to deliver the information to the designated audience, avoiding dense jargon and selecting the right material to meet their information needs, while choosing the proper tool for presenting the information.

When asked to develop a Subject Guide to post online for a chosen audience, in my case an undergraduate and general learner user group, I chose Computer Science as the topic. This meant evaluating each resource for currency and learning level, and designing the navigation to be as intuitive as possible. Anyone can perform a Google search to find a list of possible learning sources. Librarians offer the vital skill of assessing, organizing, and delivering these sources in the best manner for a given audience.
