Metadata Schema Group Project (LIS 882)
Underlying the fundamental structure of the Library is the catalog, and within it, the use of metadata records. Metadata seeks to capture information about different resources using methods that a computer can understand and then deliver to the end user. For this project, we were tasked with designing a schema that fully and accurately documented the details of a digital item.
Diving deeper into the technologies that allow the catalog to perform was one key aspect of the project, but another was that it was a group project which required extensive collaboration. This meant using shared tools such as cloud-based spreadsheets and file storage, writing XML records for the metadata in OxygenXML, and meeting virtually over Zoom. We had to consider how our metadata schema would be used to organize digital resources for a hypothetical repository, and how it might be expanded for future developments in technology. Understanding the tools that libraries use to organize their collections gives me a greater skillset for accessing the information they provide.
